Co-design for the renaturalisation of the school playground. Som Escola

The renaturalisation of the Som Escola playground stems from the need to transform the school’s outdoor space into a place that meets the needs of the educational community, incorporating nature as a key element to promote adaptation to climate change and improve the wellbeing of pupils, staff and the local community. The project envisages the playground as an educational and communal space that encourages play, rest and contact with nature, designed through the active participation of the people who use it every day.

During the 2025–2026 academic year, we worked alongside the Som Escola educational community on a diagnostic and co-design process to collectively define the future of the playground. Through various participatory activities, pupils, teachers and other groups at the school identified needs, imagined new uses and developed proposals centred on four key areas: nature and climate adaptation, diversity of play, spaces for rest and wellbeing, and the school’s impact on its surroundings and the neighbourhood.

The project continues with a commitment to turning these ideas into reality over the coming academic years. Beyond the physical transformation of the playground, the process strengthens the educational community’s involvement and demonstrates the value of collaborative design in creating spaces that are more inclusive and tailored to people’s needs.
